BTC

(Bitcoin)

BTC (Bitcoin) is the first decentralized cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It operates on a PoW blockchain with a 21M coin supply cap.

As "digital gold," BTC is used for store-of-value (institutional adoption via
ETFs like BITO), remittances, and hedge against inflation (especially during QE). Its price volatility (peaked at $69K in 2021) attracts traders but deters merchants. The SEC classifies BTC as a commodity (regulated by CFTC), unlike securities like ETH. Energy-intensive mining consumes ~0.5% of global electricity. El Salvador adopted BTC as legal tender in 2021, testing its viability alongside fiat currencies.
