AD&D

(Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance)

AD&D insurance pays benefits if the insured dies or suffers specific injuries (loss of limbs, sight, etc.) due to accidents. It supplements traditional life insurance by providing additional accident-specific coverage, often through employer benefits packages.

Policies typically pay 100% of the face amount for accidental death, with partial payouts (e.g., 50% for loss of one limb) for non-fatal injuries. About 40% of U.S. employers offer AD&D as a voluntary benefit. Premiums are affordable ($0.10-$0.30 per $1,000 coverage monthly) since accidents account for only 5% of deaths. However, AD&D has strict exclusions (often excluding high-risk activities) and shouldn't replace comprehensive life or disability insurance.
